How Altitude Training Works

Training At High Altitude

Enhance your athletic performance. Altitude training is used for all types of athletes, whether your sport requires you to compete at high or low altitude. Even if you don’t consider yourself an athlete.

Whether you live at sea level or higher, day to day, your body is used to a specific oxygen concentration and maintains a fairly consistent muscle metabolism.

In high altitude training, your body needs to acclimatize to lower oxygen concentrations which in turn increases your red blood cells and hemoglobin and alters your muscle metabolism.

What Happens When You Train At High Altitude?

Check Out The Science Behind Hypoxic Training

In addition, along with improving oxygen flow, high altitude training can also increase your maximal oxygen intake, or VO2 max (the highest amount of oxygen your body can consume during intense exercise). If you aren’t familiar with why that’s important, consider that your muscles use oxygen during intense exercise, and create a by-product called lactic acid. This lactic acid can accumulate and lead to muscle fatigue.

By training in a high altitude or in a high altitude environment, you can maximize your VO2 and increase your tolerance to lactic acid, leading to improved your overall endurance.

This is further explained in a 2018 article in the NIH (National Library of Medicine).

This is further discussed by the National Center for Biotechnology, wherein they state altitude training could increase your tolerance to lactic acid. This means your body can handle higher levels of lactic acid before your muscles get tired.

Another NIH study in 2020 demonstrated how adolescent runners found that altitude training enhanced cardiorespiratory fitness and running velocity at various blood lactate levels.

Gym Based Training

It isn’t always possible for athletes to travel to different altitude locations to train. At Summit Peaks Altitude Training, we bring the convenience of altitude training to athletes year-round.

Our controlled environment eliminates logistical challenges and time constraints of traveling to traditional high altitude camps, and provides supervised training, performance monitoring, and a variety of equipment and training modalities that allow you to integrate altitude training into your existing workout routine.
