When at higher altitudes we experience an increase in our basal metabolic rate (BMR) along with an increase in our leptin levels. Leptin is a hormone produced in the fat stores of our body and is known to suppress hunger. Its job is to signal our brain when we are full, triggering us to stop eating. Leptin also supports efficient metabolism.

Studies have also shown that the levels of leptin increase when at altitude, perhaps in response to decreased oxygen. Participants in the studies ate less, even after symptoms of altitude sickness had disappeared.

Weight loss is a common consequence of climbing, hiking, and mountaineering at altitude. The physical challenges of climbing in rough terrain and deep snow with heavy-weight clothing and gear are enormous. Some researchers estimate that climbers can burn up to 6000 calories per day in such extreme environments. But they also burn higher amounts of calories while they acclimatize at base camp.
